FIELD WORK #10: Good Tom Wallace - Coal Creek

Drew Norley June 6, 2018

Good Tom Wallace are a folk outfit from Sydney, singing dog-eared tunes in the old-time close harmony tradition. Jane Wallace (guitar), Mischa Vickas (guitar and harmonica) and Gary Crockett (clawhammer banjo) blend tight-knit, three-part vocals with understated acoustic backing. While new to the local folk circuit, Good Tom Wallace have saddle-worn credibility, resurrecting songs of tenderness and sorrow with warmth and authenticity.

FIELD WORK #8: Shelley's Murder Boys - The Cuckoo Bird

Drew Norley May 24, 2018

Turn off the highway and head into the hills with Shelley’s Murder Boys – a band that brings a new verve to the old timey music of the Appalachians.

With a haunting fiddle, a rollicking guitar, and a twanging banjo, Shelley and the boys will take you on a journey to their porch in the backwoods. You may never escape.

In the band’s own words: “We are just a simple devil-lovin family that play bluegrass and folk tunes about the hills and rivers we've roamed, the things we've seen and the stories we’ve been told.”

Featuring Shelley, Jimmy and Joe, the band has appeared at several folk festivals and have supported many bands, such as The Backsliders.

FIELD WORK #4: Rollo Anderson - Dead Man

Drew Norley March 14, 2018

After spending an hour and a half filming a different song and packing up all my gear, Rollo stood by the Cooks River and started playing this. Spidey-sense tingling, I ran and grabbed my camera to try capture the moment before the light disappeared. The sun is almost completely gone by the end of the take but there was just too much magic going on here to be denied.

FIELD WORK #3: Richard Galluzzi - South Creek

Drew Norley February 28, 2018

Richard Galluzzi is a clawhammer banjo player and member of Golden Whistler from between Sydney & the Blue Mountains. Fresh from performances at The Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival and the Illawarra Folk Festival, Richard braved a torrential downpour to record this performance under the oldest surviving stone arch bridge on the mainland, Lennox Bridge, Blaxland. His latest album Banjo From The Cumberland Plain was released mid 2017 and is available now from https://richardgalluzzi.bandcamp.com/releases

This video began as a technical experiment, a way to test out my GoPro in low light conditions and to teach myself some basic compositing. It's set to a piece of music by LA based composer Chrysanthe Tan titled Magic Lady from her 'Stories' album. She is super talented and was gracious enough to let me use her song, so you should check out her stuff here http://www.chrysanthetan.com.
